Description:
Framed, watercolour portrait of John Nelson Darby by [unknown member of the Christian Brethren]. Label on the reverse states: ‘J.N.D. had an objection to being photographed, but consented to sit to a brother, an artist, who was in poor circumstances, with a view to helping him. Mr Henry Petter obtained the painting-having, it is believed, bought it from the Artist’s brother; and had it framed at Shapland & Petter’s. On Mr Henry Petter’s death it came into Mr Charles Petter’s possession; from whose widow I bought it in 1938.’ There is some foxing on the portrait.
