Description:
Map: Northamptonshire. Created by John Speed in 1610 and re-printed in the Nineteenth Century. Monochrome with ornate border, the map is very rich in detail including cities, place names, rivers and mountains. Castles, mountains and significant buildings are illustrated by drawings. Inset top left is a map of Northampton with a key to significant features and a 'Scale of Pases'. There is a decorative oval cartouche containing the title of the map. On the right are illustrated: 'The armes of all those honorable Families that have bene created Earles of Northapton, since ye Normans conquest.' There are eight coats of arms illustrated. Bottom right is a map of Peterborough with a key to significant places. A paragraph describes the Battle of Edgcot. with a small illustration. Bottom right is a pair of compasses and a scale bar. The inscription here reads: 'Performed by John Speed and are to be sold by George Humbell in ye Popes Head Alley, Cum Privilegio'. Above this is a coat of arms and a description of the three sieges of Northampton, in 1106, 1263 and 1459. A compass rose bottom right has printed next to it: 'Jodocus Hondius Calavit Anno 1610'. The legend along the bottom says: 'Reprinted and published by Kelly & Co., and presented to the subscribers to the Post Office Directory of Northampton-shire'.
