Description:
Portrait of an unknown young man, known as the Grafton portrait. Despite lack of evidence, facial similarities between this & the Shakespeare portrait in the collected plays (1623) have encouraged a belief that this is a portrait of Shakespeare, aged 24. Left to the Library in 1914 by Thomas Kay of Stockport. Newly restored by the National Portrait Gallery in 2005.
