So-named because each line is made up of a three-character phrase. Traditional primer for primary education, teaches Literary Chinese reading as well as elements of history and philosophy. Likely first composed in the 13th century CE, attributed to several authors but its original author remains unknown. Widely used right up to the mid 20th century, still used today but no longer part of formal education. Virtually every educated person in early modern and modern China, and elsewhere in East Asia, would have memorised this text. Printings of this text were widely available in relatively cheap woodblock printed editions. A few lines were added in the early twentieth century to describe the history of the fall of the Qing and the founding of the Republic of China in 1912.
