Coat of arms of the Earl of Bothwell (Hepburn): Gules, on a chevron Argent two lions pulling at a rose. The manuscript has been partially destroyed by fire. The red pigment on this heraldic design is Vermilion. In heraldry, red is called Gules. This fire-damaged coat of arms belongs to ‘Earle Boythwell’, better known as James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, abductor and subsequent husband of Mary, Queen of Scots.
