Description:
|
Sixteenth-century Parisian armorial binding for Henri II and Diane of Poitiers, possibly by Claude de Picques. Greek style. Full goatskin over wooden boards with grooved edges; multiple fillets and tooling to form a border; central cartouche with the arms of Henry II; four fleur-de-lis, three interlaced crescents and monogram: intertwined initials H and D; both boards show remains of [silver or white?] decoration; both boards have four holes which previously held protective pins or bosses; spine smooth; the upper board-edges have holes for pins onto which ties or clasps would catch.
