Sixteenth-century Parisian armorial binding for Henri II and Diane of Poitiers, possibly by Claude de Picques. Greek style. Full goatskin over wooden boards with grooved edges; multiple fillets and tooling to form a border; central cartouche with the arms of Henry II; four fleur-de-lis, three interlaced crescents and monogram: intertwined initials H and D; on the upper board the cartouche and arms are gilt with gilt lettering: ΟΠΠΙΑΝΟΣ A.; both boards show remains of [silver or white?] decoration; both boards have four holes which previously held protective pins or bosses; spine smooth; blind-tooled crescents at top and bottom; multiple blind-tooled letters H with crown above, and gilt-tooled fleur de lis; raised headcaps at top and bottom of spine with a double row of sewn headbands; the upper board-edges have holes for pins onto which ties or clasps would catch; all edges are gilt and gauffered with dots and floral motifs.
