Binding: Sixteenth-century Italian full dark brown leather; gilt fillet and gilt geometrical design of interlacing painted strapwork, filled with gilt tools, to form a border; inner frame of blind-tooled interlaced ribbons; central panel of interlaced painted strapwork of curves and straight lines; gilt-lettered at centre of upper board: Dante / Terze rime / M.DI; two pairs of doves on spine; smooth spine with gilt and painted strapwork decoration and gilt-tooled; all edges gilt and gauffered.
