Lent Term 1905 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated Lent term cover has a beautifully wrought watercolour of a peacock as the centrepiece framed by flowers. The List of Contents on the first folio has been famed by a full border in pen and ink and the Editorial notes follow this on folio two. The poetry competition set in the Christmas edition has proved to be a success with seventeen entries, five of which have been published in the magazine. To encourage further submissions a prize is next to be offered for the best short story, essay or sketch. However, the offer of a prize will necessitate a contribution by the students to fund it. A design for a permanent cover has now been decided upon for future editions but thanks are extended to Sally Matthias for the cover of this edition, which is especially commended. The articles begin on folio three with the regular general update 'Chronicle' which has been penned by H. M. Stephen. This is followed by 'Our Fire Practice' an illustrated poem by G.L. the illustrations have been tipped in, in-between rhyming couplets. On folio five there is an untitled short story. The poem 'A Prophecy' appears directly after on the verso of folio eight. Opposite on folio nine is an account of 'A Summer Holiday in the Highlands' which is signed 'Mountaineer'. Directly underneath appears the poem 'An Apology' and opposite on folio ten 'Following the Rainbow', a second poem is initialled D.J.S. Overleaf on the verso appears 'Howlers' an item with contributions from K.C. and E.W. detailing misuse of language and amusing errors. On the verso of folio thirteen is an essay 'A Dog Night' supplied by Thistle, the House dog, after the success of the account of his day by Caesar, the House cat, in the previous edition. Following this on folio fifteen is another poem 'One Phase of Youth' which is signed W.W.W., however it is noted that this poem is not an entry for the poetry competition. On the verso of folio fifteen is a new item by 'L.W.' titled 'Library Notes' which details additions to the stock of the library and also suggests that a subscription fee paid by students would fund new additions at the beginning of each session. The following folios contain the five competition entries for the poetry competition. Each poem has been signed with a nom -de plume and is titled either 'Youth' or 'Ashburne House'. The staple 'Athletic Notes' appears on folio eighteen. Directly underneath is a tipped in illustration captioned 'Portrait of a Celebrity'. On folio nineteen is the article 'A Jumble Sale' and the edition concludes on the verso of folio twenty with 'Hall Doings' which details some of the social gatherings that have taken place in the House recently.
