Description:
Christmas 1904 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated Christmas term cover is the magazine title (spelt Yggrassill) framed in a partial border of stylised foliation and flowers. The cover has been coloured with watercolour paint and also bears the names of the Editors; Ethel Winstanley B.A. and Marion Haweridge B.A. There is a List of Contents on the first folio followed by the Editorial notes. The Editors welcome two new artistic contributors and thank S. Matthias for the cover illustration and also G. Llewellyn for her illustrations. Gratitude is also extended to M. Phillips for the photographs and to Miss Stephens for the post cards that illustrate to edition. The Editors are pleased to report an increase in interest in the magazine and set a poem competition (with a prize to be won) on one of the two subjects 'Youth' or 'Ashburne House'. Underneath the notes are two tipped in postcards of St Chrysostom's Church. The articles begin on folio two with the regular general update 'Chronicle' which has been penned by H. M. Stephen. Another postcard and a photograph of St Chrysostom's Church appear underneath the Chronicle. These images are followed on folio four by 'Through Other Eyes' an account of the activities of the preceding Halloween. Next is a poem by regular contributor 'C.L.C.' entitled 'The Stockings' which concludes on the verso of folio five. Directly after, on folio six is 'Heroines of 18th Century Fiction' by Ethel Winstanley. In the list of contents the following item should be 'Cartoon' but is in fact 'Bermondsey Settlement' a submission by 'an Old Ashburnian'. This is followed on folio eleven verso by the comical 'Many Inventions' an illustrated guide to useful inventions by Gwladys Llewellyn. Directly after this is a piece on Abt Vogler by Jessie D. Clarkson which concludes on folio fourteen (N.B. here in between the folios is some film labelled St Chrysostom's Church 1904). Two photographs have been tipped onto the verso of this folio, one labelled 'Exeter Cathedral' and the other 'One of the guests at the baby party'. Opposite this on folio fifteen is a fictional account titled 'A Cat Day' which is signed 'Caeser'. Directly underneath is a photograph captioned 'Mistresses Room'. The following article is 'A Walk from Rieder furka to Bel alp' on folio seventeen which has been illustrated with colour postcards and a black and white fold out panorama of Belalp, Switzerland. On the verso of folio twenty is a poem entitled 'A Song' by L.W. Kewpson [?]. Opposite this on folio twenty-one is a list of present students 1904-1905, including posts held by old Ashburnians. Below the list is a photograph of some old Ashburnians. On the following folios there are four more photographs under the heading 'Games at the Baby party'. Directly after this, on folio twenty-three is the 'Correspondence'. The letter is addressed to 'My dear fellow Ashburnians' and is by regular contributor Elizabeth Parker. The staple feature 'Athletic Notes' appears on folio twenty-six and is signed E. A. Boulsover (Hon, Sec,). The final item is a 'List of Hall Officials'. The inside of the lower cover has a cartoon tipped onto it entitled 'Old stories retold'.
