Description:
Lent 1904 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The illustrated Lent term cover is the title of the magazine framed in the stylised branches of a tree. The cover has been coloured with watercolour paint. The first folio has a tipped in postcard of King's College, Cambridge. The Editorial notes begin on the verso with an apology for the lateness of the magazine due to the pressure of work on the third year contributors. However, the notes also report that pleasingly, this edition has welcomed two new contributors. The piece concludes with a plea to Ashburnians past and present to submit articles for consideration by June the 13th. Underneath the notes is another tipped in postcard, this one is of King's College Choir, Cambridge. The articles begin on folio two with the regular general update (usually titled 'Chronicle'). This is followed on folio three with a poem 'Song of the Elephant'. Next is an article by Gertrude Bywater on 'The Legends of Early Rome' which begins on the verso of folio three. On the verso of folio six is an essay 'Good advice to young people', followed on the verso of folio seven by a short moral tale 'Melancholy is a mistake'. Directly after this is a short piece entitled 'A Medley' on the verso of folio eight and the regular feature 'Athletic Notes', signed with the initials C. L. C., appears on folio nine. An untitled poem appears next on folio ten; each verse has been written first in English and translated underneath into German. Correspondence to the Editor follows on the verso of folio ten with an open letter from Annie Yates on the Ladies Training College in Cambridge. The letter is preceded by a tipped in postcard of the Ladies College and concludes with a tipped in postcard of Trinity College Bridge on folio thirteen. The edition closes with a letter from E. Parker that in turn contains a poem 'Grasse above Cannes' by Dr Hereford. The poem details the Dr's convalescence in the South of France. Miss Parker has obtained permission to have it included in the magazine based on the fact of it being a modest appearance 'in MSS form only'.
