Christmas 1902 edition of Yggdrasill magazine; created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated cover is a pencil drawing, a sphere with a diaphanous swirl surrounding it and the magazine title. The photograph which appeared as the frontispiece is clearly missing. On page two there is a table of contents and the Editorial notes. The notes mention that the photographic illustrations (including the missing frontispiece) were all supplied by Miss Parker and suggest that a photographic society would make a good addition to the societies already established at the Hall. However, the Editor goes on to detail that some societies are languishing because of the pressure of studies. The best attended is the dramatic society. There is also mention of the newly established 'Old Ashburnians' Association' with the first reunion of former Ashburnians arranged for the following summer. The notes close with details of the frequent visits of former students. The articles begin on folio three (NB this edition has been foliated not paginated) with the 'Chronicle' followed by a list of students. The update of 'Athletic Notes' begin on the reverse of folio four followed by 'A Cocoa-Fight' on folio five, the poem is initialled C.L.C. at the bottom. On folio six is 'Pyrmont'. The reverse of folio seven is a poem dedicated to 'The Dog of Ashburne House' which is illustrated with a photograph, the name 'Thistle' has been pencilled in next to the image. There follows on folio eight 'The story of the Rowan' which is signed simply 'M', after which appears another poem 'Le Retour d'une Absente'. The poem has notes to all the verses and is signed M. Park. On the verso of folio nine is a short piece entitled 'An Impression' which has been signed 'T'. 'Everyman' is an article written as a response to another article of the same name which recently appeared in the College magazine and begins on folio ten. A wry 'Anecdote' appears just after this on the reverse of folio eleven. The article 'Life in a Convent School in Belgium' appears on folio twelve. The contribution 'Ferishtah's Fancies' is a discussion of some of Robert Browning's later poems. The essay begins on folio fourteen and concludes on folio seventeen after which is another poetry themed piece 'Four short Lyrics of Percy Bysshe Shelley'. On folio twenty is a first-hand account of the funeral of John Ruskin titled 'Funeral of Mr Ruskin' and dated Coniston Jan, 25th 1900. There is a description of simple service and a copy of the hymn composed for the occasion. The account concludes with the note that one of the pall-bearers was a grandson of the poet Wordsworth and is signed simply 'M'. Folio twenty-one is 'Correspondence' with a letter from Ethel Robinson to the Ashburnians followed on folio twenty-two with 'Answers to Correspondents'. The Editorial appears on folio twenty-three listing the Officers as follows; Editor: M. Phillips, Sub-Editor: M. Haweridge and Secretary: N. Dishart(?). The rest of the Committee members are E. Parker, J. Williamson and S. Marshall. The reverse of folio twenty-three is a list of the Hall Societies and Officials.
