First edition of Yggdrasill magazine, created by the students of Ashburne House. The Illustrated cover is a pencil-drawn classical figure. A table of contents appears on the third page with a photograph of the warden Miss Stephens opposite. An editorial note follows explaining the origins of the magazine title "Our magazine is to be entitled 'The Yggdrasill', The name which everyone knows, is taken from the old Norse mythology. Yggdrasill, the Ash-tree of Existence figured the whole of Life." There follows on page five a 'Chronicle of Ashburne House 1898-1901' by Miss Stephens, followed by a list of the students by year since the House opened. On page thirteen is an article entitled 'First Impressions of Ashburne House' (no author is noted) followed by 'Athletic Notes' on page fifteen which has the initials A.P. added in pencil underneath. An article on the 'Influence of Greek Philosophy at Rome' follows on page seventeen; the initials W.M.S have been (later?) added in pencil. Page twenty-five is the Ashburne House Song which has been signed E.P. (Elizabeth Parker) underneath. Following the House song is an article on Bacteria. Page thirty-one has a list of recent Ashburnian prize winners and a poem 'Evening Song' (Goethe) which has the note 'translated from the German'. There follows more poetry with 'A Midnight Revel', which is signed 'Wildfire' followed by a note on 'unwashed cocoa receptacles left in student's rooms.' signed 'Domesticated one'. An article on Girolamo Savonarola then appears which is signed J.D.C. On page thirty-nine there appears a 'Double Acrostic' and an 'Ashburnian Pibroch' (a parody) signed E.P. in ink. Page forty is a letter from a medical student (Mary Clarke) from Birmingham University to the Editor of the magazine. The letter is dated 4th December 1901. There follows on page forty-two a 'Leaf from a Journal of a modern Pepys' and opposite on page forty-three 'Hamlet' in brackets (Ashburnian interpretation). The Editorial appears on page forty-four (however the page has been incorrectly numbered as '42'). The Editorial invites all Ashburnians to contribute to the next magazine, setting the submission date of March 1st (1901). The Editorial also requests all communications to be addressed to the Editors, that names must be supplied with the articles (although not necessarily included for publication). The next issue is to be for the Lent term 1902. The Officers are listed as follows; Editor: E. Parker, Sub-Editor: M. Park, Secretary & Treasurer: M. Phillips. The Committee is also listed by name: E. Parker, M. Park, M. Phillips, J. Williamson, M. Haweridge, S. Ashworth. On the final page are two more rather faded photographs of Miss Stephens and Ashburne House.
