Songs of Innocence was originally printed in 1789. It is a conceptual collection of 19 poems, engraved with artwork. In this 1894 facsimile there is an introduction, a colophon and four extra plates. The last four plates, according to the notice preceding them: "were not usually included by Blake among his Songs of innocence, but as they form part of the volume that he gave to Flaxman we are bound to give them here. They will appear again in their proper places among the 'Songs of experience' in our next volume in other colours.".
