Description:
View of the Albert Memorial, Albert Square, Manchester. Five steps lead up to the bottom of the monument which has decorative railings protecting the base; four lamps stand positioned at each corner of the memorial. The memorial, completed in 1865, is a monument to Prince Albert, Prince consort of Queen Victoria and features a marble statue of Albert designed by Matthew Noble. The figure is placed within a large Medieval-style ciborium which was designed by the architect Thomas Worthington. The ciborium is topped with an ornate spire, and on each side a crocketed gable with canopied pinnacles on colonettes. Within the canopies stand symbolic figures representing art, commerce, science and agriculture.
