The statue is enclosed in low wrought iron railings. Humphrey Chetham was a successful Manchester textile merchant who was educated at Manchester Grammar School. In the 1640's Chetham donated a large sum of money to form a school for forty poor boys, which later became Chetham's Hospital and then Chetham's School of Music.
