Description:
View of the statue of Sir Humphrey Chetham in Manchester Cathedral. Seated figure of Chetham on a pedestal, with the figure of a youth sat on the floor in front, reading a book. The statue is enclosed in low wrought iron railings. Humphrey Chetham was a successful Manchester textile merchant who was educated at Manchester Grammar School. In the 1640's Chetham donated a large sum of money to form a school for forty poor boys, which later became Chetham's Hospital and then Chetham's School of Music. He also left money to form the Chetham's Library, which included money to pay for the books.
