Description:
|
Interior view showing the grand staircase at Sheffield Town hall from the second landing. The staircase is in the Renaissance revival style, with a carved marble balustrade. The entrance hall is no less impressive with arches and arcading featuring heavily in the architecture of the hall, which has carved alabaster decoration by Frederick William Pomeroy. The ornate carved friezes above the arches incorporate scrollwork and putti (cherubic figures) into the design and depict the industries of Sheffield. Also a portrayed is the slaying of the ‘Dragon of Wantley’, the legend of a dragon-slaying by a knight on Wharncliffe Crags in South Yorkshire, who is protected by a bespoke suit of Sheffield armour. The town hall was designed by E W Mountford. Construction began in 1890 and this print shows the building upon completion in 1897. An extension designed by F. E. P. Edwards in the same style was completed in 1923.
