Description:
Interior view showing the entrance hall and staircase at the Darley Dale Hydropathic Establishment, Derbyshire. The main feature of the entrance hall is the wooden staircase. The staircase is carpeted and the newel posts at the bottom of the staircase are decorated with lamps that have spherical glass shades. The hall has a wooden fireplace and is partially panelled around the plain plaster walls. The Bedford Lemere daybook lists the architect as T. Worthington, and the client as W. Atkins. In 1904 the building was converted into a school, and in the 21st century into part of a retirement village. Darley Dale Hydrotherapy Establishment was an example of a late nineteenth century health building one of many hydrotheraputic establishments in the Matlock area. Documentary evidence indicates that the building had a number of baths, including plunge, vapour, sitz, and Russian varieties, massage and other treatment rooms. Facilities also included croquet, billiards, chess and other games, a library and reading room. There are some very small flaws in the print itself, likely sustained in the printing process rather than a flaw to the original plate or negative.
