Coronation decorations being put up at the Oxford Road entrance to the front quad. Taken at ground level from Brunswick St the shot is angled west and slightly to the north towards the arched entrance into the University's front quadrangle. It shows part of the pollution blackened façade of the Whitworth Hall as it adjoins the archway which is framed on it's other side by the central University Tower with it's statue of John Owens almost completely obscured by a combination of shadow and soot. To the south of the entrance there is a figure standing on top of a tall set of step ladders who seems to be tending to some of the flower boxes which had been hung from the University buildings among the banners and streamers to mark the occasion of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The decorations have a somewhat incongruous appearance draped as they are against the blackened stonework of the Gothic structures. On the reverse is written 'Coronation decorations June 1953'.
