The interior of the Handloom Weaving Room in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street; Taken from the southern end of the room the shot is angled northwards down a cleared central aisle between the metal framed looms on either side. Against the southern section of the eastern wall there is a closed wooden cupboard with a table placed in front of it, then to the north of this a row of looms stretching the remaining length of the chamber. The western wall, which has windows set into it that overlook Sackville Street, has a continuous line of these looms running parallel with it for the length of the workshop up to the northern wall which has a centrally located fire place. There is a boxed wall clock on the eastern wall of a style similar to those found in many of the rooms in the building. A plate riveted onto the nearest of the looms to the photographer reads ‘Atherton Bros makers Preston’. The Handloom Weaving Room was located on the ground floor (floor B) of the building just south of the main entrance and to the north of the Textile Engineering Laboratory.
