Description:
The interior of the Hydraulic and Mechanical Engineering Laboratory in the UMIST main building. Taken from the centre of the room the shot is angled northwards to show an array of heavy machinery, pipes and gears fixed between the northern wall and a trench in the floor lined with glazed bricks. A large metal pipe extrudes from the eastern end of this leading off to the north with a tachometer fixed to the top of it. Next to this there is a thick drive belt linking what appears to be a generator on the floor with a flywheel on the ceiling which in turn has a belt leading from it southward out of shot. In the centre of the collection of pipes there is what seems to be a funnel made from riveted sheet metal and next to this an inverted cone of the same material which rises above the height of the funnel and has a chute leading from its top edge from which it appears some form of liquid would fall from the one into the other. There are windows set into the western wall which look out on to Sackville Street and in the eastern wall a doorway and south of this recessed into an arch in the brickwork a partition of wood and glass separating the lab from the corridor beyond. There is a small number ‘43’ printed in the bottom right corner of the picture. The Hydraulic and Mechanical Engineering laboratory was located in the basement (floor A) of the building on the western side just north of the Foundry.
