The interior of the inorganic chemistry laboratory in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street. Taken from one corner of the room and shot looking down the aisle running between the lab benches and the wall towards the opposite end of the room. Down both of the side walls in the spaces between the large windows glass cases have been fixed to the brickwork by means of metal brackets. Each of these then has a pipe leading from beneath it to a series of ceramic drains that run along the edges of the lab floor. The benches that run in two rows through the room are stacked neatly with phials and bottles of acids and other chemical substances. The roof of the chamber is vaulted, supported by a series of exposed beams that rest on plinths located about two third of the way up each of the side walls at regular intervals. The peak of the roof is glazed allowing in extra sunlight. At the far end of the room above the centrally located door there is a boxed clock fixed to the wall of a style similar to those found in many of the room in the building. The inorganic chemistry lab was located centrally on floor E of the building.
