The interior of the Spinning Room in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street. Taken from a slightly elevated position at one end of the room, the shot is angled across a number of metal framed industrial spinning machines most of which have multiple spools of cotton set out on them towards the wall at the far end of the workshop . In the centre of the chamber there can be seen a group of students/members of staff in discussion with one another around one of the pieces of machinery. There are several other figures dotted around the room, all wearing overalls, working at the machines which are linked to drive shafts running along the ceiling by means of fly belts which transmitted the power from the engine room. On the reverse of the picture is an attached label on which is printed 'The University of Manchester, Faculty of technology, an instructor discussing a spinning machine with final year students' and written in pencil the date 'Nov 1944'.
