Alexander John Scott; A photograph of Scott sat reading in high backed chair. He was the first principal of Owens College holding the position from 1851 until 1857 and in addition was Professor in English Language and literature 1851-1866, Professor in Hebrew 1851-1860 and Professor in Logic and mental and moral philosophy 1851-1866. On the reverse of the picture there is an attached label which reads 'Manchester University (Owens College) Alexander John Scott MA first principal of Owens College 1851-1857'.
