The interior of the Advanced Physical Laboratory in the main UMIST building on Sackville Street. Taken from the north east corner the shot is angled south west and shows at the western end of the lab a row of three workbenches that extend across most of the width of the room. These have numerous items of scientific equipment set out on their wooden surfaces and to the east of them are positioned two narrow pedestals constructed of glazed bricks. Between the photographer and these are a pair of wooden tables set end to end which again have apparatus placed on them included amongst which is a gas chamber. Situated at intervals around the southern and the western walls there are uniform wooden cupboards and at the eastern most section of the southern wall that is visible within the picture stands a glass fronted cabinet. A doorway is set into the western wall at its southern end which opened on to the Professor of Physics room and in the same corner in the southern wall is the main entrance to the laboratory leading from the corridor that runs the length of the northern wing of the building. The northern wall of the chamber has a number of tall windows that looked out over Whitworth Street with wide sills that have been used to store equipment. In front of the windows about midway along the length of the room a tripod has been set out and opposite this, fixed to the southern wall is what appears to be a switch board. A boxed wall clock similar in style to those found in many of the rooms in the building has been hung from the wall above this. The Advanced Physical Laboratory was located on floor B of the building midway along the northern wing. There is a small number ‘42’ printed in the bottom right corner of the picture and another ‘42’ written in ink on the reverse.
