Description:
Temple Street (no longer in existence). Image taken at ground level from the middle of Temple Street just north of the junction with Jackson Street the shot is angled along the line of the cobbled road as it runs north towards the railway viaduct with the southern face of the extension to the main UMIST building on Granby Row rising beyond it. There is an old mill building on the eastern side of the road located roughly where an open square is now situated on the central UMIST campus in front of Staff House. On the western side there are further industrial structures which were demolished soon after the photograph was taken to make way for the construction of the Renold building. A pair of workmen can be seen removing paving slabs from around the base of a lamppost on the eastern pavement and next to them is a parked delivery van advertising “Pepsi Cola”. Opposite this is another truck with a sign on the roof which reads “Manchester Tanzaro”. Rising above the railway line on its northern side is a further factory with a painted sign identifying the building as “Roebucks case works Granby Row”. This was soon afterwards bulldozed and the site is now a landscaped strip between the main building and the southern extension of the campus. On the reverse of the image the following is written “MCST Campus site photograph 1959. Temple St” and the number “15” has been written in the bottom left corner.
