The interior of the first year Chemistry Laboratory. Located in the old Chemistry buildings that run along the northern edge of Burlington Street and which now house Student Services (the chemistry department having moved to Brunswick Street). The image taken from the eastern end of the room and angled towards the south west corner shows a number of unidentified students wearing lab coats and working at tables arrayed with labelled bottles containing among other things sulphuric, nitric, acetic and hydrochloric acids, caustic soda and ammonia. Along the southern wall the tall windows which looked out onto Burlington Street are visible. On the reverse of the picture is written “The University of Manchester, first year chemistry laboratory faculty of science”.
