Description:
The interior of the Whitworth Laboratory on Coupland street (now the Martin Harris building). The rather grainy image is shot from one side of the workshop looking back across the various work benches and desks which constitute the room’s main furnishings. Many of these have fixed to them Lathes or other mechanically driven devices which are in linked by belts to drive shafts which run across the room at various points and were in turn linked to the generator elsewhere in the building. Along the bottom edge of the picture has been printed ‘The Engineering Department, the Whitworth Laboratory’.
