Description:
Lent 1909 edition of Yggdrasill; created by the students of Ashburne House. The cover has the title (spelt Yggdrasil) and date of the edition framed by green watercolour acorns and oak leaves, along with fern-like foliation. There appears to be some water damage to the left side of the cover. On the reverse of the cover is a poem in green paint and opposite on the first folio a small photograph of the Manchester University buildings on Oxford Road. On the verso of folio one is a full colour illustration of 'Good King Wenceslas' with line from the Christmas Carol of the same name. Opposite on folio two is an entry 'Notes from the College Magazine'. The article details that there are now some Ashburne students in 'The Oaks' halls along with some remaining in Ashburne House. Miss Sheavyn is still Warden in residence at Ashburne House and the new Ashburne Vice-Warden Miss Parkin is resident at The Oaks. There have been further appointments of new staff to keep up with the increase of students. The first social held at Ashburne was great success and twenty-four new students were welcomed. It is with great sadness that the deaths of Miss Stephens, the first Warden of Ashburne House and also of R.D. Darbishire, one of the Halls founders are reported. The Editorial appears of folio four. The notes welcome the new staff and once again express disappointment at the lack of support from the students. It is hoped that the increase in the student numbers will bolster the contributions for the next edition. Following on the verso of folio four is a letter from Margaret Phillips under the heading 'Correspondence'. Directly after on folio six is a report on 'The Suffrage Demonstration' detailing Ashburnians involvement at meetings and Suffrage demonstrations in October 1908, there are photographs illustrating the article. On the verso of folio seven is a comic poem 'The Burgular a satire' the title of which has been illustrated. This is followed by Margaret Phillips account of her 'Travels in Japan - continued' again, the title initial has been decorated. Underneath this article on folio ten is an update on the Dramatic Society, signed E.T. Sec. Overleaf on the verso and opposite on folio eleven is a list of the students in residence. Following this on the verso of folio eleven is 'A Pome' by 'Bidol'. The opening initial hosts a miniature of students perusing a noticeboard. Opposite on folio twelve are the 'Hockey Notes' and overleaf a small piece on 'The Reading Party'. The next item is entitled 'Our Frontispiece' quickly followed by 'A Fresher by Another Fresher'. The edition concludes with a contribution by Jessie D. Clarkson on the recently deceased former Ashburne House Warden, Miss Stephens.
