Description:
Vellum roll depicting a chronological history from the creation to 15th century France. It contains 65 painted medallions. Columns one and two relating to Christian Church in Rome and the line of Roman Emperors concluded in Frame 19. The third column continues the Capetian dynasty (House of Valois): John II, with a lengthy account of how he was captured at the Battle of Poitiers and taken to England, Charles V, and Charles VI. The fourth column continues the English monarchy Edward II, married to Philippa of Hainault, and their children, including Edward, the Black Prince, father of Richard II, and John of Gaunt, father of Henry of Lancaster, who became Henry IV of England. The history of English kings concludes at this point. The medallions depict events from the text, including John II of France being captured and taken to England (62), Charles V of France (63), and Charles VI of France (64).
