Description:

Vellum roll depicting a chronological history from the creation to 15th century France. It contains 65 painted medallions. The first column relates to the Christian Church in Rome and the line of popes from Callistus II to Clement VI. The second column lists the line of Holy Roman Emperors from Otto to Conrad III (Otto I, Otto II, Otto III, Henry II, Conrad II, Henry II, Henry IV, Henry V, Lothair III [= Lothair of Supplinburg], and Conrad III). The third column continues the Capetian dynasty: Louis VIII, Louis IX, Philippe III, and Philippe IV. A later manuscript hand has corrected the issue of Philippe III by each of his two wives, Isabella of Aragon (decent of the House of Valois) and Marie of Brabant. The fourth column continues with the Crusades and the rulers of Edessa and Jerusalem: Baldwin of Bouillon assuming the title King of Jerusalem, followed by Baldwin II, Queen Melisende and her consort Fulk, Baldwin III, and Amalric I. A fifth column resumes the English monarchy with Richard I's imprisonment, John losing Normandy and his successor Henry III. The medallions depict events from the text, including Saint Louis of France [Louis IX] (59).
