Description:

Vellum roll depicting a chronological history from the creation to 15th century France. It contains 65 painted medallions. The first column relates to the Christian Church in Rome and the line of popes to Gaius (listed as Urban I, Pontain, Anterus, Synatus, Fabian, Cornelius, Lucius I, Stephen I, Sixtus II, Eutychian and Gaius). The second column relates the persecution of the Christians and lists the line of Roman Emperors to Claudius II (Septimius Severus, Antoninus, Macrinus, Marcus Aurelius Antoninus [= Elagabalus], Gellius Maximus, Alexander Severus, Maximus Thrax, Pupienus, Gordian, Philip, Philip II, Decius, Valerian and Claudius II). The third column continues with the line of the first French (Merovingian) kings (Merovech, Childeric, Clovis I, his sons Theuderic (Thierry in French), Childebert I, Clotaire I (Lothair) and Chlodomer, the next generation of Guntram, Sigebert I, Charibert and Chilperic, and the next Theuderic II, Theudebert II, Childebert II and Clotaire II). It finishes with Dogobert I who ruled over all the Franks. The fourth column gives an account of the early British kings Vortigern, Vortimer, Aurelius Ambrosius and his brother Uther Pendragon. It describes how Uther fathered Arthur by Igraine, wife of the Duke of Cornwall. The medallions depict events from the text, including the baptism of Clovis (46), a battle between the Angles and the Britains (47), Dagobert founding the church at St Denis in France (48) and Arthur killing Mordet [= Mordred] in battle (49).
