Description:
Vellum roll depicting a chronological history from the creation to 15th century France. It contains 65 painted medallions. The first column relates to the founding of the Christian Church in Rome and the first popes to Sixtus I (listed as Peter, Linus, Electus, Clement I, Anacletus, Evaristus, Alexander I and Sixtus I). The second column tells of the death of Julius Caesar, and the line of Emperors to Domitian (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, Titus and Domitian). The third column begins with Pontius Pilate and then relates the fate of the Apostles; it continues with the story of how the Franks settled in France and the French came to defeat the Romans in battle. The fourth column gives an account of the early British kings under the Romans, including Cunobelinus (Cymbeline), his sons Guiderius and Arviragus, Lucius, the first Christian king, Coel (Cole) and Constantius. The medallions depict events from the text, including a tournament (41), the French defeating the Romans in battle (43) and the baptism of Lucius (42). Part of this section is badly discoloured.
