The first column relates to the Annunciation, the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, the Wise Men and the founding of the Christian Church in Rome. The second column tells of the Ptolomeys in Egypt, Pompey in Rome, the Roman conquest of Egypt, Herod and the Massacre of the Innocents, his descendants and the founding of the Roman Empire with Julius Caesar. The third column relates the story of the Roman Republic, Hannibal and the Punic Wars, the line of consuls in Rome, how Gaul became France, the fifteen signs which will precede the Day of Judgment, and Pilate in Jerusalem. The fourth column gives an account of the populating of Ireland and the early British kings, the invasion of the Romans under Julius Caesar and the ensuing line of Roman governors. The medallions depict events from the text, including the Crucifixion (36), the fifteen signs of Judgment Day (37), how new Troy was named London (38), the death of Julius Caesar (39), and Jesus seated in the form of the first Pope (40). Part of this section is badly discoloured.
