Squyer Sche was full mesurable as women be For of here fader she had taken leue To goon to rest sone after it was eve Hire lest not appalled for to be Ne on þe morowe vnlustylich for to se And slepe here Furst slepe, and þen awoke For suche a ioy she in here hert toke Boþe of here queynt ryng and hir myrro(ur) That xx tymes, she channged hir colour And in here slepe, right for impression Of hir myrrour, she hadde a vision Wherfor er þat þe son ganne vp glide She cleped vp here mastres here biside And seide þat here liste for to ryse þise olde wemen þat be glally wise As is her mastres. and annswerd anon And seide madame, wheder wolt ye goon þus erly for the folk ben alle in rest I woll q(uo)d sche arisen for me lest No lenger for to slepe: & walk about Hir maistres cleped wemen a grete rout And vp they resyn well, .x. or .xij. Vp riseth fressh Canacee her selue As rody and bright, as doth þe yong sonne That in the Ram is iiij degreis vp ronne Noon higher was he: whan she redy was And forth she walkith esily apaas Araied after the lusty seson swote Lightly for to play, and walke a foote Not but w(ith) .v. or .vj. of hir mayne And in a trench forth in þe park goth sche The vapour w(ith) þat: fro þe erthe glode Made the sonne to seme: rody and brode But naþeles it was so faire a sight þat it made al her hertis for to light, What for þe seso(u)n: and þe mornyng What for þe Foules/: þ(at) she herd syng(e) For right anon she wist what it ment Right bi her song(e): & knew al hire entent The knot why/: þat eu(er)y tale is tolde Yif it be taried til þe luste be colde Of hem þat after it haue herkened yore The savour passith eu(er) lenger the more For Fulsumnes of his prolixite And bi þis same reson thynkith me I sholde vnto the knotte condiscende And maken of here walkyng(e) sone an ende, A myd(e) a tree full drie. as white as Chalk As Canacee was pleyeng(e) in here walk þer sate a Fawco(u)n ou(er) hir hede ful hie That w(ith) a pitous vois so gan to crie þat all þe wode, resounde of hire crie I beten had she hir silf so pitously W(ith) boþe here wynges, til þe rede blood Ranne endlong(e) þe tre þ(er) as she stood And eu(er) in oon she alwey she cride and shryght And w(ith) here bek hire silf she so twysght [þ(at) þer nys tigre]
