Description:
|
Fall of Princes. Book six: Antony fell in love with Cleopatra of Egypt and as she desired to be empress of Rome he made war on Octavian. However, Antony was overcome in a battle at sea and was put to flight. In despair Antony pierced himself in the heart with a sword and Cleopatra killed herself in grief. Red rubrication introduces the eighth book which begins by noting the severe nature of Octavian. There is a partial floriated, illuminated border and initial 'T' which begins the text. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The Roman numerals added in the margin 'XIIII' and 'XV' correspond to pages in the Pyson printed edition of Fall of Princes. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
