Description:
Fall of Princes. Book five: Hannibal was betrayed by Prusias the King of Bithynia who under pressure from the Romans laid siege to the castle where Hannibal was staying. Seeing that his position was hopeless Hannibal drank poison cursing Prusias. An illuminated initial 'T' introduces the envoy which reminds Princes that suicide is abominable to God and man. Red rubrication and an illumianted initial 'F' introduces the story of Prusias. Prusias tried to deprive his eldest son Nicomedes of his inheritance because he favoured his younger son by another wife. However his people stood by Nicomedes and crowned him their king; Prusias ended his days begging in exile. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'B' introduces the tale of Persa. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Notes:
Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
