Description:
|
Fall of Princes. Book five: Marcus took all the knights of Carthage prisoner in his prime but as an older man he was captured in battle and taken to Carthage in chains. The Romans exchanged a number of Carthaginian knights for Marcus showing that they valued him above all their prisoners from Carthage and he was received with joy at the Senate where he spoke to the people gathered. Marcus tells the Senate that Fortune has deserted him with age and caused him to be a prisoner of war. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
