|
Fall of Princes. Book three: Glad Poverty insists that Unhappy Adventure is taken from Fortune and bound to a stake where she can be seen by everybody. Further to this Fortune may only harm the fools that trust in her. Fortune should not be worshipped and when she promises the most, her flattery is stuffed with lies. Reason should be trusted because whoever climbs on Fortuna's wheel falls when he least expects it. Red rubrication and an illumiinated initial 'A' introduces the next section. Adversity is harder for a Prince to bear than a wretch who has always had discomfort. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
