Description:
|
Fall of Princes. Book one: Boccaccio writes that poor people are free from the threats that affect those in high positions. An illuminated initial 'P' introduces the envoy which warns Princes against speaking ill of others and to be wary of flatterers. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial 'W' introduces the story of Althaea and Meleager. Queen Althaea had a son called Meleager. At the birth of Meleager the Fates put a brand into the fire and said that when the brand had been consumed by fire, Meleager would die. Small illuminated and coloured initials introduce the verses. The written space is 285 x 200 mm in two columns and the script is rather an ugly and unstable anglicana formata.

Ostensibly the work is an adaptation of Laurent de Premierfait's 1409 translation of Giovanni Boccaccio's 'De casibus vivorum illustrium', a collection of moralized tragedies, extending from Adam to King John of France, that were designed to illustrate Fortune's fickle nature and the downfalls brought on by sinful living and unjust government.
