Description:
Siege of Troy. Book four: Anthenor finds Polyxena and takes her to the Greeks. Many of the Greeks weep for her and pity her but regardless of this she is dragged to the grave of Achilles. Polyxena begins to pray to the gods begging them for mercy, citing her chastity and innocence. Illustrated bas-de-page detail: Pyrrhus (Neoptolemus) murders Polyxena at the grave of Achilles and the death of Hecuba. There is a floriated, illuminated full border and an illuminated initial 'O' in the text. The illustration has been identified as being painted by an artist stylistically close to William Abell, an important mid-fifteenth English illuminator. The written space is 305 x 200 mm, 2 columns and 44 lines and the script is anglicana formata by two hands.
