The words 'Edward 3' appear in the top margin. The tale of John of Bernaby, and how John Balliol's son Sir Edward rescues him from imprisonment by the King of France, and how Sir Edward is imprisoned himself until Henry Beaumont, a friend of the King of France, asks for him to be delivered. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

aȝens king Edward of Engelonde: and so he forsoke his rea- me of Scotlonde and sette þ(er)of but litel p(ri)s // And þis S(ir) John longe duellede in F(ra)unce. til þ(t) he deide þ(er)e. and S(ir) Edward his sone vndirfenge his heritage. and dede homage vnto þe king of F(ra)unce for his landes of Dunepier // And so it fel aftirward þ(t)Edward þat was John Bailloles sone had w(t) him a squier of Engelonde þ(t) was borne in ȝork shire þat men callede John of Barnaby: and/ þis Edward Bailloil louede him muche and was negh him and ful p(ri)uee // and so þis John of Barnaby was in debate w(t) a frensh man in þe tou(~) of Dunpier and so he quelde hy(~) and wente in his way in al þe haste þ(t) he mighte in to þ(e) Castell for to haue soco(ur) & helpe of his lorde // And anon comen þe Officers of þe toun for to take John of Barnaby as a felon and S(ire) Edward his lorde halpe hi(~) and rescuede hy(~) and by nyghte made him wende out of þ(e) Castell and so he wen- te his way and come in to Engelonde w(t)oute ony harme. // And whanne þ(e) king of F(ra)unce saugh þ(t) S(ir) Edward had rescued his feloun he bicome wonder wroth aȝens S(ire) Ed- warde and anon lete him ben arreste. and toke in to his hande alle his landes // þo duellede S(ir) Edward in p(ri)sou(~) vnto þe time þ(t) S(ir) Henr(e) of Beaumu(~)de come in to F(ra)unce þe which Henry som time was erl of Angos in Scotlande þorugh his wif and was pulte out of þe forsaide erldome whanne þe accorde was bituen Englond & Scotlande þorugh þe quene .Js(abel). & S(ir) Rog(er) þ(e) Mortim(er). and hir(e) co(~)pany for þe mariage þat she made bituen Dauid þ(t) was Rob(er)t þe Brus his sone and Dame Joh(~)ne atte Tour king Ed wardus suster of Engelonde and wel vndirstode þis þ(t) at þe ende he shulde come to his right but ȝif it were þorugh Edwarde Bailloil þ(t) was right heire of þe reaume of Scotlande // And þe king of F(ra)unce Lowys louede muche þis S(ir) Henry and was w(t) him ful p(ri)uee & þoughte for to make a delyu(er)aunce of S(ir) Edward baillols
