The words ' Edward 3 ' are written in the top margin. The tale of how the brother of Edward II, Edmund Woodstock, is told by the constable of the castle that his brother Edward II is still alive, and how he pleads with the constable of the castle to let him see him. How a letter addressed to Edward II from his brother Edmund falls into the hands of Roger Mortimer. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

saide Castell and ȝaf him riche ȝiftis for to haue aqueyn- taunce of him and to knowe of his counceile // And þus it bifel þ(t) þe forsaide S(ir) Edmunde p(ra)yede specially for to telle him p(ri)uely of his lord his broþ(er) S(ir) Edward ȝif þ(t) he leuede or were dede and yif þ(t) he were alyf he p(ra)iede of him for to haue ones a sighte // And þis S(ir) John Dauerell was an hey herted man and ful of corage and ansuerede short- ly vnto S(ir) Edmund and saide þ(t) S(ire) Edward his broþer was in hele and vndir his kepynge: and derste shewe him vnto no man. sith it was defendede him in þe king(es) half Edward. þ(t) was Edwardus sone of Carnariuan and also þorugh com(~)aundeme(~)t of þe Quene. Is(abel). þe kinges mooder and of S(ir) Rog(er) þ(e) Mortymer þ(t) he shulde shewe his body vnto no manere ma(~) of þe worlde saue onliche vnto ham vppon lost of lyf and lyme and to disheritesoun of his hei- res for eu(er)more but þe fals traito(ur) falsly lyede for he was nought in his warde: but he was take þennes and lad vnto þe Castell of Berkelee þorugh S(ir) Thom(a)s Gurnay þorugh com(~)aundeme(~)t of þe Mortymer til þ(t) he was ded as bifore is saide more plener // But S(ir) Edmund of Woo- destoke wiste no þing þat Edward his broþ(er) was ded: wher vppon he toke a lettre vnto þe forsaide S(ir) John and p(ra)yde him hertely þat he wolde take it vnto king Edward his broþ(er) as to his worthi lord and he vndirfeng þ(e) l(ett)re of him and bihighte to S(ir) Edmunde forto don his messa- ge wiþouten ony manere faile: and w(t) þat S(ir) Edmund nome his leue þ(t) is to seyn of þe forsaide John and wente þo in to his owene cuntre and lordshipe in kent þ(t) he had þere // And anon as þis same John wiste þ(t) S(ir) Edmund of Wodestoke was gone in to kent his owene lordsshipe. anon he wente in al þe haste he myȝte fro þe castel of Corf and com vnto S(ir) Rog(er) þe Mortymer and toke hy(~) þe lettre þ(t) S(ir) Edmund of Wodestoke erl of kent had take. him closed and ensealed w(t) his owne seal // And whan
