was adrad and þoughte for to vndone þe pilg(ri)mage ȝif he migh- te by ony manere way and to þe king wente and saide þat þey shulde ben in grete sclaundre þorugh out al c(ri)stendome for þe deth of Thom(a)s of Lancastr(e) ȝif he suffrede þe peple done hir(e) pilg(ri)mage at Pountfret and so he counceled þe king þ(t) he com(~)aundede to close þe chirche dores of Pountfret: in þ(e) which chirche þe holy martir sent Thomas was entered and þus þey deden aȝen alle ff(ra)unchise of holy chirche so þat foure ȝer after myghte no pilg(ri)me come vnto þat holy body // And for enchesou(~) þat þe monk(es) suffrede men come and hono(ur)e þat ho ly body of sent Thom(a)s þe mart(re) þorugh counceil of S(ir) Hughe þe Spenser þe sone and þorugh counceil also of maist(er) Rob(er)t of Baldok þe false pilede clerk þ(t) was þe kinges chaunce- ler þe king consentede þat þey shulde ben sette to hir(e) wa- ges and lete make wardeynes ouer hir(e) owene good long tyme // And þorugh com(~)aundeme(~)t of þe forsaide S(ir) Hughe þe Spens(er): xiiij Gascoignes wel armede kepte þe hulle þ(er)e þat þe goode man sent Thom(a)s was don to his deth and byheueded so þat no pilg(ri)me myghte come by þat way: ful wel wende he to haue bynome cristes myght and his power and þe grete loos of miracles þat he shewede for his mart(re) Thom(a)s þorugh out al cristendome // And þ(t) same time þe king made Robert of Baldok a pilede Clerc and a fals þorugh prayer of S(ir) Hugh þe Spens(er) þe sone chaunceler of Engelond: and in þe same time was þe Castel of Walling forde holden aȝens þe king þorugh þe prisoners þat were wiþinne þe castel for sent Thom(a)s querell of Lancastr(e) wherfore þe peple of þe cuntr(e) come and toke þe Castell vp- on þe forsaide p(ri)soners. wherfore S(ir) Joh(a)n of Solemtou(~) knyȝt and S(ire) Edmund of þe Beche. p(er)soun and a squyer þ(t) me callede Roger of Waltou(~) were taken and sent to þ(e) king to Pountfret and þ(er)e þey were done into p(ri)sou(~): and þe for- saide Roger was sent vnto york and þ(er)e he was drawe & honged // And anon after S(ir) Rog(er) Mortim(er) of Wygemor(e)
