in his hande riden w(t) baner displayed aȝens his pees as a traito(ur) // And with þat word þe gentil erl Thom(a)s. w(t) an hye voys sayde. nay lordes for sothe and by sent Thom(a)s y was neu(er)e traito(ur) // þe Justice saide aȝen þo // Thom(a)s oure lord þe king pult vppon þe þat ȝe haue robbedd his folc and mordred his peple as a þef. // Thom(a)s þe king also pulte vppo þe þat he scomfitede ȝow and ȝoure peple w(t) his folc in his owene reaume wherfore ȝe wente and fleye to þe wode as an outla- we and also ȝe were taken as an outlawe // And Thom(a)s as a traito(ur) ȝe shulle ben hanged by resoun: but þe king hath for- ȝeue ȝow þat gewes for loue of Quene Jsabelle // And Tho(ma)s resoun wolde also þ(t) ȝe shulde be honged but þ(e) king haþ for ȝeue þat gewes for cause and loue of ȝour lynage // But Thom(a)s for as muche as ȝe were take fleynge and as an out- lawe: þe king wile þ(t) ȝour hede be smyten of as ȝe haue wel deserued: anon don him out of prees and anon bring him to hi(s) iugement // þe gentil knyght whanne he had herd alle þese wordes: w(t) an hye voys he criede sore wepyng. allas sent Thom(a)s faire fader allas shal J ben ded þus g(ra)unte me now blisful god ansuere. but al it availede him no þing for þe cursede gascoignes pulte him hider and þider and on him criede w(t) an hey voys .O. king Arthur most dredeful wel knowen is now þin opene trait(er)e in euel deth shalt þ(u) die as þow hast wel des(er)uede // þo sette þey vppon his hed in scorne an olde Chapelet al to rent and torne þ(t) was noȝt worth an halpeny: and after þe setten him vppon a leue white Palfray. ful unsemeleche and ek al bare w(t) an olde bridell and w(t) an horrible noyse þey drowe him out of þe Castell toward his deth and caste on him menye balles of snowe // And as þe tormento(ur)s lad him out of þe Castel þo saide he þese pitouse wordes and his handes held vp in hye towardes heuene // Now þe king of heuene ȝeue vs m(er)cy for þe erþelich king hath vs forsake. and a fre- re p(re)chour wente with him out of þe Castell til þ(t) he com
