vilaynes Ribaudes lepten aboute him in eu(er)y syde þat gentil erl as tyrauntȝ and wode turme(~)tours and despoilede him of his armure and cloþede him in a robe of Raye þat was of his squyeres lyuere and forth lad him vnto york by wat(er) þo myghte men se muche sorwe and care for þe gentille knygh tes fledden in eu(er)y side and þe ribaudes and vileynes egrely ham descriede and grad an hey ȝelde ȝow traitours ȝelde ȝov. // And whenne þey were ȝelde þey were robbede and bounde as þefes allas þe shame and despite þat þe gentil ordre of knyȝthode þere hadde at þat bataile. and þe lande þo was w(t)oute lawe. for holy chirche þo had no more reu(er)ence þan it had ben a bordel hous and in þ(t) bataile was þe fader aȝens þe sone and þe vncle aȝens his nevev. for so muche vnkyn denesse was neu(er)e seyn bifore in Engelond as was þ(t) time among folc of o nacioun for o. kynrede had no more piete of þat oþere þan an hung(re) wolf hath of a sheepe: and it was no wonder: for þe grete lordes of Engelonde were nouȝt alle of o nacioun: but were mellede with oþ(er)e naciouns þ(t) is for to say some Britouns. somme.
