Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' A ' introduce the tale of Hugh Spenser, the King's Chamberlain, and how no man can have access to the King except through him, and the payment of a fine. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

sorwe for þe englisshe hosebonde men þat couþ(e) nothing in werr(e) þere were quelde and drenchede in an arme of þe see and hire chiuenteyns S(ir) William of Meltone þe erchebisshop of ȝork and þe Abbot of Selby w(t) hire steedes fledde and comen vn to york and þat was hire owene folye þat þey had þat meschaunce for þey passede þe wat(er) of Swale and þe Scottes sette a fire .iij. stackys of hey: and þe smoke þ(er)of was so huge þat Englisshe men myghte nought se þe Scottys // And whanne þe Englisshe men were gon ouer þe water þo comen þe Scottes w(t) hire wyn- ge in a manere of a shelde and come towarde þe englisshe me(~) in a rawe and þe englisshe men fledde for vnneþe þey had eny men of armes for þe king had ham alle almost lost at þe sege of Berwyk and þe Scottisshe hobilers wente bituene þe Brugg(e) and þe Englisshe men // And whanne þe grete host ham mette: þe englissh men fledde bituene þe hobilers and þ(e) grete host and þe englisshe men almost were þ(er)e quelde and he þat myghte wende ouer þe water was saued but manye were draynt allas for þ(er)e were slayne manye men of Religi oun. and seculers and ek p(re)stis and clerkes and w(t) muche sor we þe erchebisshop scapede and þ(er)fore þe Scottes callede þat bataile þe white bataile How king Edward dede al ma- nere þing as S(ir) Hugh. þ(e) Spens(er) wolde Cap(o) C(mo). iiij(xx). xiij(mo). And whanne king Edward herde þis tydinge he reme- uede his sege fram Berwyk and com aȝen in to Enge londe: but S(ir) Hugh þe Spenser þe sone þ(t) was þe kinges cham berlayn kept so þe kinges chambr(e) þ(t) no man most speke w(t) þe king but he made w(t) him a fret for to done his nede and þat ouer mesure and þis Hughe bar him so stout þat alle men had of him scorne and despite and þe king him self wolde nought ben gou(er)ned ne reweled by no maner man but onleche bi his fader and by him // And ȝif ony knyght of Engelond had wodes maners or lande þat þey wolde coueyte anon þe king moste ȝeue it ham or ellis þe man þ(t) oughte it shulde falsly be endited of fforest or of. ffelonye
