no man of renoun saue S(ire) Ric(ard) of Cornewaile and him quelde a flem(~)yng out of þe reede halle with a quarell as þe forsaide Richarde dede of his helme. and co(~)maundede ham for to ȝelde ham and pute ham to þe kinges g(ra)ce and þe Scottes wolde nouȝt wherfore þat halle was brent and cast a doun and alle þo þat were wiþinne were brente // And king Edward loste no mo men at þat viage of simple astate but .xxviij. englisshe men. and þe wardeyn of þe Castel ȝaf vp þe keyes wiþouten ony assaute and þ(er)e was take Will(ia)m. Dowglas. and S(ire) Simo(~)d Frisell. and þe Erl Pat(ri)k ȝelde him to þ(e) pees but Jngh(a)m of Hunfreuil and Rob(er)t of Brus þ(t) were w(t) king Edwarde forsoken king Edwarde and helde w(t) þ(e) Scottes and aft(er)ward þey were take and pulte in to p(ri)sou(~). and aftirward þ(e) king for ȝaf ham here trespas and delyu(er)ede ha(~) out of p(ri)soun and þo lete king Edward closen in Berwik w(t) wall and and w(t) dichis // And afterward Rob(er)t Rous wente to Tyndale and sette Woxebrigg(e) afire and Excelh(a)m . and Lamerstoke . and quelde & robbede þe folc of þe cuntr(e). and aftirward he wente fro þen nes vnto. Donbarr. and þe ferste Wennesday of March þe king sente þe Erl of Garrenne. S(ire) Hughe P(er)cy and S(ire) Hughe Spen ser. w(t) a fair compaignye for to bisege þe castell but on þat me callede sire Richard Sywarde a traito(ur) a fals ma(~) ymagi nede for to bisgyle þe englisshe me(~) and sente to þe englisshe me(~) ham for to desceyue and saide þ(t) he wolde ȝelde to ham þe Cas- tell. ȝif þat þey wolde g(ra)unte ham .viij. daies of respite þat he mighte sende and telle to S(ire) Joh(a)n Bailloil. king of Scot lande how þ(t) his men ferde as þey were in þe castell and sen- de him worde ȝif þat he nolde remeue þ(e) seege of þ(e) Englisshe me(~) þ(t) þey wolde ȝelde þe Castel to Englisshe men // þe messang(er) þo come to S(ire) Joh(a)n Bailloil king of Scotlande þ(er)e þat he was w(t) his host and his message. tolde him // And S(ire) Joh(a)n nome his ost and come in þe morwe erly toward þe castel. and S(ire) Ric(ard).
