axede þ(er)e of þe clergie þe .x(e). of eu(er)y chirche in Engelonde for to conquere and gete aȝen Normandie and Angou(~). þ(t) he had lost and þey wolde nouȝt g(ra)unte þat þing wherfore he wax wonder wroth // And in þe same time deide þe bisshop hubert: and þe pour and þe Couent of Kaunterbery chosen aȝens þe kinges wille to ben Erchebisshopp. maist(r)e Stephen of Langetone a good clerc þat wonede at þe court of Rome and sende to þe pope hire eleccioun and þe pope confermed it and sacrede it at Viterbe // Whenne þ(e) king wiste þis ty- dynge: he was wonder wroth: and drof þe prio(ur) and þe couent fro Kaunt(er)bery and exilede ham out of Engelond and com(~)aundede þat no man(er) l(et)re þ(t) come fro þe court of Rome ne no maundement shulde ben vnderfonge ne ple- ded in Engelond // Whanne þis tydinge come to þ(e) pope: he sente vnto king Joh(a)n . by his l(et)re and p(ra)yde him with good wille and good herte: þat he wolde vnderfonge Ste- phene erchebisshopp of Kaunterbery vnto his chirche and suffre þe Priour and his munkes to come aȝen vnto hir owene duellynge but þe king wolde nouȝt g(ra)unte it for no þing How king Joh(a)n wolde nouȝt done for þe popes comaundeme(~)t wherfore al Engelond was enterdi ted and suspendede.
