The word 'Stephen' appears in the top margin of the folio. The tale of how Stephen takes the city of Lincoln. Red rubrication and an illuminated initial ' W ' introduce the tale of how King Stephen and the Empress Maud wage war upon each other. The written space is c.182 x 112 mm and the script is anglicana formata.

ascapede away wiþoute ony manere harme. and þo toke þe king þe citee and duellede þ(er)inne til Candelmasse // And þo come þe Barouns þat helde wiþ þe Emp(er)esse. þat is for to say þe Erl Randulphe of Chestr(e). þe Erl Robert of Gloucestr(e). Hugh. Bygot. Robert of Moleye. and broughte w(t) ham a strong poer How Maude þe Emp(er)esse wente fro Wynchestr(e) vnto Oxen- forde and after she ascapede to Wallyngford and what sorwe and disese she hadde Capitulo vjxx xixno. Whanne þe king was taken and brought in to warde in the castel of Bristow þis Maude þe Emp(er)esse anon was made lady of Engelond and alle men helde hire for lady of þe lande // But þo of kent helde with king Stephenes wyf and also William of Pree. and his retenu halpe ham and helde werre aȝens Maude þe Emp(er)esse: and anon after þ(e) king of Scotland come to ham wiþ an huge numbr(e) of peple. & þo wente þey yfere vnto Wynchestr(e) þere þat þe Emp(er)esse was and wolde haue taken hire: but þe Erl of Gloucestr(e) come w(t) his poer and faught wiþ ham: and þe Emp(er)esse in þe mene while þat þe bataile durede scapede fro þennes and wente vn to Oxenford and þere hire helde and in þat bataile was þe Erl of Gloucestr(e) descomfited and taken and wiþ him meny oþ(er)e lordes // And for his delyu(er)aunce was king Stephene de- lyuered out of p(ri)sonne. and whanne he was delyuered out of p(ri)soun. he wente þennes to Oxenford and bisegede þe Emp(er) esse: þat was þo at Oxenford. and þe sege endurede fro migheles masse vnto sent Andrewes tyde // And þ(e) Emp(er)esse lete þo cloþen hire al in white lynen cloth for enchesou(~) þat she wolde nouȝt ben knowe: for in þe same tyme þere was muchel of snowe and so she ascapede by þe thamyse fram ham away þat were hire enemys and fro þennes she wente to Wallyngforde and þere hire helde // And þe king wolde haue biseged hire: but he had so muche to done w(t) þe Erl Randolphe of Chestr(e). and with Hughe Bygod þ(t) strongleche werrede vppon him in eu(er)y place þat he nyste whider for to
